Work Delegation and Evaluation

Balance.  Our work delegation system is an interactive process designed to balance summer associate interests with current firm projects and initiatives. Our goal is to provide summer associates with an interesting mix of work as they gain exposure to as many different lawyers and practice areas as possible. To this end, our summer associates complete between 15-25 assignments throughout the summer – usually with little or no repetition of assigning attorneys. From the feedback we have received, we believe Shipman & Goodwin stands out in providing balance, variety, and an exceptional experience for our summer associates.

To further explain our process, Work Coordinators meet with the summer associates weekly to distribute work assignments and follow up on current projects. Summer associates receive assignments from throughout the firm, but are encouraged to express preferences for areas of the law in which they would like to work. The weekly meeting measures the balance of the work, the variety of work, as well as overall summer associate satisfaction.

Performance feedback is given during two formal evaluation conferences that are held over the course of the summer. Upon completion of each work assignment, the supervising attorney completes a written evaluation designed to help the summer associate polish his or her skills. The Summer Program Director and a Work Coordinator conduct mid-summer and final evaluations conferences with each summer associate, during which the written evaluations are reviewed and overall performance is discussed.

On Work Delegation

"As a summer associate, the work delegation system at Shipman & Goodwin provided me with the opportunity to work on projects in many different areas of practice. After each project was completed, the assigning attorney offered valuable feedback that helped me sharpen my practice skills." - Kevin Roy: Summer Associate (2002); Work Delegation Coordinator (2005, 2006)
