Robert Simpson Honored with Trailblazer Award from George W. Crawford Black Bar Association

Shipman & Goodwin partner Robert R. Simpson recently received the George W. Crawford Black Bar Association’s Trailblazer Award at its Annual Awards and Scholarship Dinner. The association, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is a volunteer statewide organization that works to increase the role and number of Black attorneys and raise awareness of legal issues affecting the Black community; it is an affiliate of the National Bar Association.

Mr. Simpson embodies the attributes of the Trailblazer Award, which recognizes an individual in the legal community who promotes personal growth, leadership development and community service within the legal profession; the recipient must also exhibit the highest degree of professionalism and promote and advocate for equal opportunity in the legal profession. In an inspiring speech accepting the award, Mr. Simpson made a passionate call to action to advance Crawford’s mission.

An experienced litigation and trial lawyer, Mr. Simpson represents clients in state and federal courts throughout the country. He currently focuses on products liability litigation, with an emphasis on drug and medical device litigation, as well as toxic tort, employment and commercial disputes. For the last five years, he has served as lead trial counsel and national coordinating counsel for several significant cases for Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries.

In addition to being a long-standing member of Crawford, Mr. Simpson is actively involved in several other key professional associations, both on a national and statewide level. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee for the National Bar Association, Commercial Law Section, most recently serving as Chair of the Section. Mr. Simpson is part of the leadership of the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation and was recently the Division Director to 23 Section committees. He is on the Board of the Hartford County Bar Association and is also a member of the Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association and the Hartford County Bar Association.

Mr. Simpson contributes a considerable amount of time to community activities, including serving on the Board of Directors of Riverfront Recapture, Inc., as Stewardship Director for the Faith SDA Church in Hartford and as a drill instructor/director of the Golden Eagles Pathfinder Scout Group.
