This complimentary breakfast workshop for school administrators, special education directors and personnel, counselors, social workers and health personnel goes beyond the basic legal requirements pertaining to schools’ obligations to maintain the confidentiality of student information. We will focus on the more difficult questions school personnel face when dealing with the sharing of highly sensitive communications involving students.
Specifically, this program will address how and when to communicate with parents regarding sensitive topics such as substance abuse and student sexual activity and when school professionals may (and should) share such student communications with teachers, administrators, mental health professionals and other adults within the school community.
We will discuss confidentiality relative to the following topics:
- Substance use/abuse
- Sexual activity
- Counseling information
- HIPAA vs. FERPA
- “Privileged” communications
- Bullying and student discipline
- Child abuse reporting
Coffee and a light breakfast will be served.
