Environmental partner Andrew Davis will present "Workshop 01: Navigating Technical, Legal, and Regulatory Challenges at PFAS Sites" from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Monday, October 19th, as part of the AEHS Foundation's 42nd Annual International Conference on Soils, Sediments, Water, and Energy, taking place October 19th-22nd at the University of Massachusetts.

This workshop is designed to give owners, site managers, attorneys, regulators, and environmental scientists and engineers a practical, in-depth understanding of the complexities PFAS can introduce to environmental sites, and strategies to manage them in an uncertain regulatory and legal environment. This workshop looks beyond the PFAS basics, focusing on site experience. A dynamic panel will provide discussions on the following topics:

  • Fate & Transport/Forensics: What are some unique fate & transport concepts that need to be taken into consideration for PFAS forensics, looking beyond the analytical data?
  • Vapor Intrusion and Air Transport
  • Developments in PFAS Ecological Bioaccumulation Factors
  • Legal Perspective: Class Action suits: current status and future expectations; Changes in federal regulations: how they will filter down and affect litigation and when; Regulatory impact on property transfers, transactions, Phase I ESAs, due diligence, etc; CT PFAS labeling requirements
  • Regulatory Perspective: We will hear from two very active Northeast states: Massachusetts and New York
    • MA:
      • Closure of PFAS sites under the MCP and MassDEP actions: the number of PFAS sites, their MCP status, impediments to closure, and information to include in your closure  report.  Discussion of MassDEP involvement and their approach to imminent hazards in private wells.
      • Overview of recent NPDES PFAS projects, description of MassDEP’s NPDES and Residuals program PFAS lab guidance, and a walk-through of the wastewater and residuals PFAS data available through the public portal.
    • NY: How working groups actually work!  Progress in identifying and mitigating PFAS sources and transport pathways across multiple Divisions in a State Agency.

The workshop will conclude with an open Panel Discussion and sharing of ideas and experiences.

CEU Info: Workshop 01 has been approved for 1 DEP credit and 3 regular credits for Massachusetts LSPs. Participants must register and pay for CEU credits when registering for the conference. Attendees must sign in and out at the workshop door and remain present for the entire workshop. Partial credit will not be awarded.
