Shipman Lawyers Articles Featured in FORUM Magazine

The Forum magazine is a publication of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association, and the Spring 2021 issue is “The Child Issue: Where Youth and the Law Intersect.”  Shipman lawyers wrote two of the articles in this special issue, which we are happy to share with you.

The inspiration for this issue of FORUM was derived from former Supreme Court Justice and DCF Commissioner Joette Katz’s eye-opening article on sex trafficking in this state. Joette wrote “Shining a Light on the Dark Scourge of Sex Trafficking: A Clear Look at a Shadowy Reality.” The full article is available here.

Tom Mooney and Natalia Sieira Millan wrote “Do Bullies Have Free Speech Rights? The United States Supreme Court Revisits Tinker in a New Case.”  In their article, Tom and Natalia review the implications of B.L. v. Mahanoy Area School District, a Third Circuit decision that holds that school officials do not have the authority to regulate off-campus speech by students.  As we await the ruling of the United States Supreme Court in that case, Tom and Natalia urge that the Court reject the reasoning of the Third Circuit to hold that school officials can regulate off-campus speech when such speech affects the school community, as is the case with cyberbullying.  The full article is available here.
