Shipman employment lawyer Dan Schwartz authored the article entitled "Neurodiversity in the Workplace" for Practising Law Institute (PLI).

It may be hard to remember, but when the topic of disability discrimination first arrived in the workplace, the inclination was first to think about physical disabilities. Over time, mental disabilities gained further recognition in the workplace as also being covered. With each of these developments, employers adapted and employees benefited from accommodations that were at last provided to them to allow them to perform the essential functions of their jobs.

Neurodiversity—and the issues arising from it—is now the newest frontier of conditions employers must consider. Even more than that, employers must now begin to understand and implement best practices for inclusion of neurodiverse individuals in the workplace.

In this PLI article, Dan explores:

  • What is Neurodiversity?
  • Neurodiversity and the ADA
  • Steps for Employers
  • Impact on Employers
