Brave New World: Returning to the Office in a Post-Pandemic Environment

Date/Time: May 13, 2021 from 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Presenters: Andreana R. Bellach, Keegan Drenosky and Jessica Richman Smith

The expedited roll out of the vaccine in Connecticut, which leads in vaccine distribution, as well as nationally, has sped up the return to work plans for many employers. But returning to work still presents employers with workplace and employee relations challenges. As offices look towards reopening, it is important to have the right strategy in place for employee safety, vaccine requirements and reasonable accommodations and risk mitigation. Join Shipman lawyers Andreana R. Bellach, Keegan Drenosky and Jessica Richman Smith for a webinar discussing these pressing issues, as well as a focus on the additional challenges specific to reopening for municipal employers.

Free Speech for Public Employees -- Speak at Your Own Risk!

Date and Time: May 19, 2021 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Presenters: Thomas B. Mooney, Natalia Sieira Millan and Sarah A. Westby

Over fifty years ago, the United States Supreme Court held that public employee speech is protected by the First Amendment. However, from the beginning public employees have been subject to discipline if their speech is disruptive. Now, when public employees speak on social media and offend others, disruption is a real possibility given how quickly and broadly such speech can be disseminated.

Join Shipman lawyers Thomas B. Mooney, Natalia Sieira Millan and Sarah A. Westby as they review the rules for public employee speech and present case examples of when public employee’s speech is protected and when it is not. Audience members will be able to submit questions during the presentation and in advance on the event registration form for a Q&A session at the end of the webinar.

Bonus Session: Considerations for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Public Sector

Date: TBA

Presenters: Sarah E. Gleason and Kevin M. Roy

Join Shipman lawyers Sarah E. Gleason and Kevin M. Roy for a discussion focused on diversity, equity and inclusion workplace practices and policies.

  • A primer on relevant legal considerations affecting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the public sector
  • What public sector employers can and cannot do in complying with their legal obligations with respect to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives
  • Recommendations regarding best practices
