The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced the termination of the designation of Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), after determining that the conditions in Ethiopia no longer support a TPS designation. The termination is effective February 13, 2026.

DHS has automatically extended the validity of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) through February 13, 2026 for those individuals in TPS from Ethiopia with EADs in the category A12 or C19 and an expiration date of June 12, 2024 or December 12, 2025. Accordingly, employers should update existing I-9 records for impacted employees to document the automatic extension and will need to re-verify those employees with other acceptable I-9 documentation on or before February 13, 2026.
