The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of the designation of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), after determining that the conditions in Somalia no longer support a TPS designation. The termination is effective March 17, 2026.

DHS has automatically extended the validity of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) through March 17, 2026 for those individuals in TPS from Somalia with EADs in the category A12 or C19 and an expiration date of March 17, 2023, September 17, 2024, and March 17, 2026. Accordingly, employers should update existing I-9 records for impacted employees to document the automatic extension and will need to re-verify those employees with other acceptable I-9 documentation on or before March 17, 2026.
