Shipman & Goodwin LLP, a full-service law firm, has vaulted to the top ranks of gender diversity among U.S. law firms, earning recognition from The National Law Journal as the eighth most inclusive firm for women after participating in the publication’s annual NLJ 500 firm headcount report for the first time.

“Advancing the careers of women is more than just a diversity, equity and inclusion mission statement for us. It’s a sustained commitment that is central to Shipman’s strategic growth and success. Our success in recruiting, retaining and promoting women has translated to successes for our clients and firm overall,” said Leander Dolphin, the firm’s Co-Managing Partner. “We are gratified, but not surprised, to find our commitment to gender inclusion places us among the nation’s top firms. Even as we celebrate this recognition, we know there remains work to be done, which we are committed to doing.”

Dolphin referenced the firm’s dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion since she joined the firm in 2004 in an interview with Law.com about Shipman’s debut in the list’s top 10 firms. The firm’s ongoing participation in Diversity Lab’s Mansfield Rule and its achievement of Mansfield 3.0 Certification Plus status provided baseline metrics against which the firm measured its progress.

The NLJ’s “Women In Law Scorecard 2021” shows that 45.6% of Shipman’s lawyers are women, including 39.4% of its partners and 34.9% of its equity partners and 49.3% of its non-equity partners.  Some 57.2% of the firm’s associates and 59.8% of its other attorneys are women as well.

“Our ongoing participation in the Mansfield Rule certification process ensures Shipman consistently and consciously considers diversity when making hiring, promotion and other critical organizational and business decisions,” said Jessica Ritter, Co-Chair of the firm’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee. “The strong collaboration between firm management and other key members of the firm emphasizes focused and responsive action, which has proven successful.”
