    Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Shipman strives to achieve a workplace that is reflective of the clients we serve and the communities in which we live and work.  We support ongoing initiatives to recruit, mentor and retain a diverse team of lawyers and staff.  We sponsor organizations and develop events that share perspectives and raise awareness of diversity issues facing organizations and the community.  We serve as leaders and partner with others to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession. In 2022, Shipman announced a three-year $225K commitment to the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA). The partnership with NLADA is part of a sustained commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion that is central to Shipman’s strategic growth and success.

    Our Commitment

Shipman is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion within the firm, the legal profession and the community. We value the unique backgrounds and distinct contributions of all individuals; our deep commitment is reflected in our efforts to promote understanding, advancement and empowerment.

Our focus on diversity, equity and inclusion is top down and throughout the firm.  Our engaged and energetic Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee consists of partners, associates and staff.  A number of our lawyers participate in affinity bar organizations, including leadership roles.  We recognize the individuals who contribute to the firm’s diversity mission and give billable hour credit for work that furthers the firm’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.  Our client teams are diverse, and we are committed to providing all of our lawyers with new opportunities as appropriate.

Shipman has participated in Diversity Lab’s Mansfield Rule since 2019, and earned Mansfield Certification Plus status in 2023-24. Additionally, Shipman was recognized as one of Diversity Labs’ “Early Adopters,” a designation for firms that have achieved certification and remained committed for 5-6 years.

Diversity, equity and inclusion is a core value of the firm, and participation in this important initiative ensures that we are being consistently and consciously inclusive when making hiring, promotion and other critical organizational and business decisions.

Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee

Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee collaborates with firm management and other key members of the firm to emphasize action.  The DEI Committee is focused and responsive, and shares the following mission:

    • Support ongoing initiatives to recruit, mentor and retain a diverse team of lawyers and staff.
    • Sponsor organizations and develop events that share perspectives and raise awareness of diversity, inclusion and equity issues facing organizations and the community.
    • Partner with others to increase diversity in the legal profession.

    Shipman Women's Alliance

Shipman is proactive in its efforts to hire, promote and retain female attorneys and our success is reflected on a daily basis in our leadership, philosophy and practices.  A woman is currently serving as Managing Partner of the firm, three of the seven partners on our Management Committee are women, and our General Counsel and Associate General Counsel are women.  We are proud to have the highest percentage of female partners among large firms in Connecticut, have been one of the first large Connecticut law firms to have a woman partner, and to be leaders in addressing and advancing women’s causes in the legal profession.

Our Shipman Women's Alliance networking alliance provides a platform for our attorneys and clients to share their insights, ideas, experiences and inspirations.  Through various events and meetings, diverse and talented people are brought together to establish longstanding, valuable relationships and to enhance their network.  Shipman Women's Alliance is committed to cultivating an environment that advocates professional development and promotes equal opportunity. Internally, Shipman Women's Alliance provides a forum for discussing issues facing women attorneys and serves as an avenue for developing mentoring relationships.  The Alliance regularly holds internal events such as lunch and learns and sponsors external events at organizations such as the YWCA, United Way and Corporate Counsel Women of Color.  The Alliance also hosts an annual golf clinic which provides an opportunity for our lawyers and guests at all levels of ability and interest to take some lessons from LPGA instructors.
